Not far from Voi

This old petrol (gas) station is close to Voi, the closest town to the main entrance to Tsavo National Park. Tsavo is even bigger than some states in the USA.

I have always been fascinated by this structure. It reminds me of an era when The Jetsons were a vision of life in the future.

It was in nearly the same ghost-town condition when we passed it by in 1991.

If you look really carefully, you can see one of the baboons that lives there. He's between the two columns at the right of the pic.

Can he pump gas? Would I pay with bananas?

Bizzare. I have actually been to this petrol station...when it was operating. There was a baboon there then.

Ah, yes -- Man Eater's. Years ago, when this petrol station was still open, we would regularly stop there for a break on the way between Limuru and Mombasa. We had a close encounter with a baboon there -- it actually scared him as much as it did us.

We were in a van -- two families heading to the coast. Herb and I had gotten out and were stretching. The baboon apparently smelled our snacks and charged toward the open door, right toward the two of us -- our wives and kids were still in the van.

Herb and I "dove" out of the way (our wives have never let us live down the lack of protection for our families). That movement apparently startled the baboon and he broke off his "attack". There were several baboon that hung around there and we decided it was too dangerous.

By the way, liar_liar, you do not want to approach a baboon. They are pretty nasty critters.

Thanks for the memories.
