When I was in school, this style of boot was called "chukka". Here, it's made by Bata and called "The Safari Boot".
And they are very popular here.
This billboard has lasted longer than most in Nairobi. (It's not a question of durability - it's a matter of how long the company pays to advertise.)

Just read the past few posts here. I like the one about the restaurant, pool, etc. Sounds like my kind of place! I think we used to call the shoes "High Tops" but I'm not sure if they are the same or not.
I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya for 3 years and just returned from my 2nd trip to the country. So good to see blogs on Kenya!! It makes me miss Kenya even more!
Any advice on where I could find a decent travel agency that deals in airfare from Kenya to Washington DC? Most of the websites do not sell airfares originating from Africa, argh! Asante
We use Elite Travel in Westlands. I don't have their number handy, but they give as good a deal as any.
(Basically, there is not as much competition going out of Africa vs. coming into. No Travelocity equivalent; sorry!)

Hello. When I was at school these shoes were called 'desert boots'. I remember (with some horror) how I used to wear them with a uniform which was all too short.
After highschool, on a visit to Nairobi I bought myself another pair, but don't know what ever happened to them.
Asante sana, Bwana Paul!
